A 22-year-old man from Victoria Falls, Kelvin Ndebele, has been remanded in custody after a shocking assault incident in which he allegedly attacked Nkosiyenzile Gumede (22) with stones before biting off part of his nose.
The incident occurred on 3 July 2025 at Magrett Moyo’s homestead in Lukunguni Village 1, Chief Shana, Jambezi, near Victoria Falls.
Ndebele appeared before Victoria Falls Magistrate Ms Linda Dzvene on Friday, facing assault charges.
Prosecutor, Mrs Portia Moyo, narrated the details of the attack, stating that Ndebele arrived at Gumede’s residence at around 7am and accused him of spreading gossip.
Without warning, Ndebele allegedly began assaulting Gumede by hurling stones at him using a catapult, striking him multiple times across the body.
“The complainant tried to defend himself by holding the accused, but Ndebele retaliated by biting him once on the nose, severing part of it,” Mrs Moyo told the court.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to Ndebele’s arrest. Gumede was rushed to hospital for medical examination, and a medical report confirming the extent of his injuries was presented as evidence.
“The accused acted unlawfully and with intent to cause bodily harm, or at the very least, realising the real risk of such harm,” said Mrs Moyo.
Ms Dzvene remanded Ndebele in custody, with sentencing set for today. The case has sent shockwaves through the Lukunguni community, with residents expressing horror at the brutality of the attack.
Meanwhile, in another incident, 30 year old Siphilisiwe Ndlovu has been taken to court for assaulting Ms Ellen Chakanyuka by hitting her with a pot once on the head intending to cause her bodily harm or realising that there was a real risk or possibility that bodily harm may result.
The court heard that both women stay at Jafuta compound on the outskirts of Victoria Falls and are neighbours.
“On 7 July 2025 at around 6am and at Jafuta compound, Victoria Falls, the complainant (Chakanyuka) was escorting her children to school and the accused person (Ndlovu) confronted her holding a pot.
“A misunderstanding arose between the two over an undisclosed issue and the accused person went on to hit the complainant once on the head with a pot,” said Mrs Moyo.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Ndlovu. Magistrate Ms Linda Dzvene remanded Ndlovu to today for sentencing.
