MAPUTO. — Five Vietnam nationals are facing trial in Maputo after simulating the kidnapping of a Vietnamese teacher in order to extort money from the Vietnam Embassy in Mozambi-que.
The group faked the kidnapping of the teacher, who was also part of the gang, in late November, demanding money from the Vietnamese Embassy, which paid the ransom afterwards.
But police investigation found that the alleged kidnapping was a fraud and arrested all suspects who are now accused of simulation and extortion.
More than 50 cases of kidnapping have happened in Mozambique for the past two years mostly targeting citizens of Asia origin working in the African country. — Xinhua.
