COMMUNITY football advocate Desmund Ali, popularly known as the Village Pope, has praised Innocent Mugabe — affectionately known as the Village King or Marobha — for the impact made through BJM Football Academy and Inno Cosmos.
Ali believes Mugabe’s contribution to grassroots football has not received the recognition it deserves, despite the two projects having served the local community and created opportunities for young players over many years.
BJM Football Academy is based in Harare’s high-density suburb of Mabvuku.
“We are proud of the impact BJM Football Academy and Inno Cosmos have made in our local community football, and now the nation is benefiting,” said Ali.
“Well done, Innocent Mugabe. The recognition is long overdue.”
Responding to the tribute, former CAPS United striker Mugabe, who is now based in Basingstoke, England, said the compliment carried special meaning because it came from someone who has also devoted considerable time and effort to serving the same community in Mabvuku through football.
“I take such a compliment seriously, especially coming from the Village Pope
—someone who has also done tremendous work for our community,” said Mugabe.
“We have both played our part through football, keeping young people engaged, developing talent and helping to keep children off the streets for more than a decade.
“I am glad that the nation is now also benefiting from the work we started within our local community. Desmund Ali’s contribution deserves recognition too.”
Mugabe said grassroots football was about more than producing talented players, as it also provided discipline, direction and hope for young people.
Through BJM Football Academy, Inno Cosmos and his wider football-development initiatives, “the Village King” remains committed to creating pathways that allow young players to enjoy the game, develop their abilities and progress to higher levels.
“Together, we will continue serving our community and building a better future for the next generation. The young will grow,” said Mugabe.
