POLICE in Masvingo are investigating a case in which a man from Mkwasine in Chiredzi handed over a metal box containing 760 live rounds of ammunition he allegedly picked up while weeding his field.Masvingo police spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula yesterday said Enock Chikwezvezve, 22 of Village 4 discovered the ammunition in January. She said the man kept the box before handing it over to police on Thursday.
The ammunition is compatible with an AK rifle. She said the bullets were rusty but still intact showing that no one had tampered with them.
“The live rounds are believed to have been left during the liberation struggle. The ammunition has been taken to our artillery section,” Insp Mazula said.
She advised members of the public not to tamper with live rounds of ammunition since it is dangerous.
“We advise members of the public to report incidents of this nature to the police. They must not take live rounds to their homes because it is very dangerous. They must report to the army or police who deal with artillery and know how to handle arms of war safely. People should not attempt to open weapons,” she said.
Chiredzi district in Masvingo has become synonymous with cases of arms of war being discovered in the bush.
In April 2011 villagers from Angus Range in Chiredzi unearthed an array of ammunition comprising 200x6mm AK-47 rifles, a grenade, a bomb and 592 rounds of 2.2mm riffle. In the same year a 10-year-old boy of Maradze Village under Chief Maranda in Mwenezi also saw a bomb and grenade while herding cattle in the bush.
