GOVERNMENT officials, traditional leaders and private sector partners have launched a conservation and food security programme at Umfurudzi Safari Area, marked by the donation of fertiliser to farmers in communities surrounding the park.

Shamva North Member of Parliament Cde Isaac Chinodakufa said the initiative was aimed at educating villagers, through traditional leadership, on peaceful co-existence with wildlife while promoting environmental conservation.

“The objective of this programme is to enlighten villagers on living in harmony with animals in Umfurudzi Park,” he said.

Cde Chinodakufa said the fertiliser donated by partners has been distributed to farmers to improve crop yields and strengthen household food security.

Chief Nyamaropa, born Munyaradzi Tivaringe, said the area had faced challenges including, deforestation and poaching but coordinated interventions were beginning to address the problems.

“Government assisted us when houses were washed away by rains. We also had challenges of tree cutting and poaching, but we are now planting trees and raising awareness on environmental conservation,” he said.

The chief said the donation would enhance agricultural productivity in the community.

Umfurudzi Safari Area Park manager Dr Tawanda Chipere said the fertiliser was sourced from United Capital Fertilisers in recognition of Chief Nyamaropa’s role in supporting conservation efforts.
