Vision 2030 success must be driven by strong institutions – former Auditor General

THE realisation of sustainable development goals in line with the Government’s Vision 2030 demands strong institutional support and adherence to standard corporate governance principles, especially in the public sector.
Former Auditor General, Mrs Mildred Chiri, said this today while presenting on the role of public audits in strengthening institutions in the public sector.
“Once we have these strong institutions we will be able to achieve our 2030 SDGs,” she said.
As Zimbabwe pushes to achieve the targets set out under the National Development Strategy (NDS1), which builds the momentum towards an upper middle-income economy by 2030, Mrs Chiri says there is a higher expectation by citizens for public institutions to deliver tangible results.
She highlighted that while Zimbabwe has made strides in crafting a proactive legal framework in line with the Constitution, the public audit reports have often pointed to some gaps in implementation, which public entities must thrive to bridge.
This includes bridging the gender inequalities, professionalising the public sector, through absorbing adequate skills and diversity, weeding out corruption to enhancing transparency and accountability, improving compliance with set regulations, among other, said Mrs Chiri.
Mrs Chiri is one of the key speakers who are attending the 2023 Annual Conference of the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute of Zimbabwe (CGAIZ), which began yesterday and ends today.
