Young disadvantaged children will have an opportunity to express their talent in its fullness as one art enthusiast has offered to help them nature their creativity. Shelton Chaumbira, who is a visual artist has taken it upon himself to nature young talent in his community. Chaumbira said he was born an artist and that is what he likes to do for a living. “Art is something that’s in me so I thought, let me live to do what I like,” Chaumbira said.
Chaumbira attended Glen Norah 2 High School where he did his academic education as well as art which was his practical subject. After the completion of his O-Level he ventured into art full time and earns his living by selling portraits as well as other artworks.
He said he found it hard to get professional training to perfect his work but through perseverance and hard work he managed to acquire knowledge from other artists who have done well in the field like David Chinyama and Barry Lunga.
“It was hard for me to get funds to improve myself and am aware that these young stars are passionate but don’t have enough resources so I just want to make a change in their lives.” Chaumbira teaches young people drawn from his community in Glen Norah. He trains them to draw using pencils, chalks and different types of paints on paper and canvas at his residence.
“It is my utmost desire that we build an arts centre for the children in our residence so that I can accommodate more children to do art. At the moment Chaumbira accommodates nine children whose ages range from eight to 15 years and wish to accommodate more.” Art is a well recognised field in our country and Zimbabwe has produced big artists who are recognised throughout the world.
