Several artists from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe have come together in a project themed “Miracle Mission” in a bid to keep the City of Harare clean. The artists have been carrying out a ‘‘paint a bin’’ campaign as part of the programme. The painters have decorated bins in the CBDs with various sketches to make them attractive.

Education officer for the gallery, Ackim Nyakudya, said there is need for the general public to conserve the environment and keep the city clean.

“Our main objective is to alert the general public on how important it is to keep our environment as clean as possible,” Nyakudya said.

“An artwork speaks more than a thousand words and when people see a piece of art they deduce lot of meanings, that is why art is an important aspect in our lives.”

‘‘Miracle Mission’’ is an initiative which seeks to restore Harare`s cleanness to its Sunshine City status by engaging in various projects for the same purpose.

The gallery has also engaged various partners that include The Italian Embassy, CBZ Bank, Guard Alert, Econet and many others. Prominent artists like Dominic Benhura and Ellean Barry as well as many upcoming visual artists are taking part in the programme.

“I am happy to get an opportunity to take part in making the city of Harare beautiful, it’s such a delight,” said one upcoming artist Naume Chaota.

“I enjoy art so much, I use it to express how I feel and seeing these bins looking colourful and knowing that I did something about it gives me a sense of responsibility,” she added.

A lot is being done to bring sanity to the city of Harare; recently vendors in the city were allocated convenient places to sell their wares after sprouting on pavements around the CBD. Recently, Benhura implored authorities to engage artists for the facelift of the city through art pieces.
