Plaxcedes Hove Court Reporter A 63-YEAR-OLD blind man has been charged with contempt of court after defaulting on maintenance payments for his three minor children.Ernest Gumede pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to September 24 for trial by Western Commonage magistrate Willard Moyo.

Prosecuting Kingstone Mkanganwi alleged Gumede has not been paying maintenance since March in violation of a court order directing him to pay $100 monthly payments. The order against him to pay maintenance was granted in March. “Gumede was ordered by the maintenance court magistrate to pay $100 per month to Anneliese Chikafa, 39, and sustain his three minor children.

He did not pay anything to date,” said Mkanganwi. He said the total money he owed was $600. Gumede told the court that Chikafa wanted the money to take care of herself not children. “This woman, how can she want money yet I stay with the children? Your Worship, I am the one who stays with all the three children and I take care of them all. “Maybe she wants money to take care of herself because I do not understand it,” he said.
