BULAWAYO residents will this weekend have a rare opportunity to take part in public art as a two-day exhibition will be held at the Large City Hall and Njube suburb.
Dubbed Feet-In City, the exhibition by Voices in Colour – a local arts organisation – will be a platform to encourage artistes to engage with ordinary people in creative and artistic processes. Various activities including a Green City fair, Craft Fair, interactive drumming by Drums of Peace and performances by Black Umfolosi, Umkhathi Theatre Works and Rainbow Blaze Marimba will also be held during the exhibition.
Feet-In City project director, Mthabisi Phili, said a parade would be conducted this morning from house G54737 in Njube to Njube Hall where the exhibition titled My Place, My Home will be opened.
“The exhibition is expected to engage people from Njube as they will be given a platform to celebrate their history, culture and space.
“Through Feet-In City, Voices in Colour seek to make the community more appreciative of different artworks that exist in our society. This was after a realisation that art, especially visual art, was not reaching out to the people,” Phili said.
He added that the exhibition was meant to encourage people to appreciate all forms of art.
“People only know a limited form of art and we believe one can’t appreciate art without knowing it. Feet-In City brings art to the people, giving them a platform to interact with artistes and artworks,” Phili said.
Tomorrow, another parade will be held from Eighth Avenue to the City Hall car park. The parade will be led by the Salvation Army Brass Band.
The exhibition will be officially opened at Centenary Park tomorrow evening with a music show featuring Umkhathi Theatre Works, Hudson Simbarashe, Impumelelo Shining Stars and Black Umfolosi.
