A BULAWAYO man, who borrowed $250 from a police officer and denied the issue in court, was yesterday sold out by a voice recording. Taguma Mawana of Nketa 9 was dragged to the Small Claims Civil Court by Kudzanashe Mundayi, a police officer from Fairbridge Support Unit who was demanding her $250. Mawana told magistrate Victor Mpofu that he owes Mundayi $20, adding the $250 Mundayi was talking about was a figment of her imagination.
Mundayi told the court that she recorded every conversation she had with Mawana.
She said she had a clip where he was promising to pay the $250.
Magistrate Mpofu asked Mundayi to play the clip.
Mawana was heard acknowledging that he owed her the money and promising to pay it back.
The magistrate ordered Mawana to give Mundayi her money by April, 30.
Mundayi told the court that she lent Mawana the money after he told her he wanted to start a business.
“Your worship, he borrowed the money last year in June saying he wanted to start a flea market, promising to pay it back in July last year but he didn’t. When I went to his place asking for the money I found his wife who gave me some household property,” she said.
“His wife told me that it was a token to show her husband would pay back the money and collect the goods. However, when he came back he refused to pay. In fact, he demanded his property back and I gave it to him.”
She said Mawana reported her to the police saying she stole his property.
