THE return of volleyball, which will start with the Zim Open to be played within the provinces, has charmed many, after the sport went for more than two years, without action.
Volleyball will make a grand return this weekend, with White City hosting the Southern Region tournament.
Gaths Mine courts will host the Eastern Region while the Northern Region sides will converge at Support Unit courts.
Thomas Mangwiro, the Support Unit Volleyball Club secretary-general, said they were happy their sport was back.
“As a club, we are ready as we can now focus on training, and making sure that we register all our players,’’ he said.
“At the moment, we are busy fulfilling the Covid-19 protocols, and we will see how it goes.
“The players have not been training, and they need to work extra hard, if they are to make it in the Zim Open.
“We will work hard to see that we manage all the requirements.’’
Visiting former volleyball player, Tinashe “TJ” Chinoda, who is back in the country from his Turkey base, said the move was a welcome one. He brought back kits, which he donated to six schools in Buhera, recently.
“I think it is a welcome development for both players, and coaches, as they can now focus on the sport,’’ he said. “It was not easy, to go for years, without the sport and, as a former player, I know how it can affect, both mentally and physically. “I believe there is so much talent within the clubs, which need some of these games, so that they remain in shape, for major tournaments.
