HIGHLANDERS’ chief benefactor and Welfare Services for War Veterans, War Collaborators, Former Political Detainees and Restrictees Deputy Minister, Tshinga Dube has urged club members to vote for people with the capacity to turn around the fortunes of the club.
Highlanders’ members will converge at the club house on Sunday to vote for a vice-chairman and treasurer. Incumbent vice-chairman Mgcini Sibhalo Mpofu will be seeking a fresh mandate and is being challenged by Nkosinathi Ncube, Harare-based businessman Morden Ngwenya and Bulawayo businessman Kenneth Mhlophe.
Treasurer Donald Ndebele will fight it out with Charles Ndlovu.
Tshinga Dube said members must elect candidates that are capable of steering the Highlanders’ ship through turbulent waters.
He said those eyeing posts in the executive must be honest with themselves and tell the electorate what exactly they will do for the club or what they have done.
“We want men of steel; men who will turn around the fortunes of the club once in office.
Let’s turn around this club into a modern day marvel,” said Dube.
Ncube and Ngwenya have already unveiled their manifestos, with Ngwenya coming up with a 10-point plan ranging from using his corporate position to approach various organisations to partner Highlanders.
He said he would push for the implementation of the club’s strategic plan as well as pushing for resuscitation of the now defunct Highlanders Royals.
Mhlophe said he does not believe in manifestos as Highlanders already has resolutions and a strategic plan endorsed by members, arguing that all that is needed is for someone to ensure they are adhered to.
He said he could not go against what members have already agreed because the duty of the executive committee is to implement what members endorse.
Ncube, who unveiled his manifesto on Tuesday, said he would seek to address the club’s ballooning debt of more than $500,000 as well as introduce a medical aid scheme for players.
