Mukudzei Chingwere in Tehran, Iran
Vice President and Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Constantino Chiwenga has arrived in Iran for bilateral engagements with the host government.
The Vice President is here at the invitation of the host Government where he is expected to extend an investment call to Iranian companies as well as seek areas of economic corporation.
His visit here is a result of the Second Republic’s diplomatic offensive led by President Mnangagwa which seeks to return capital back to Zimbabwe under the”Zimbabwe is open for business” mantra.
Iran boasts of a strong economy dominated by oil and gas. It is also characterised by agriculture and services sectors, among others.
Their interest to collaborate with Zimbabwe is a sign that big economic powerhouses are taking note of the awakening Zimbabwean economy which is being configured towards the attainment of an upper middle-income society.
VP Chiwenga said he is here at the invitation of the Iranian government to discuss and see possible areas for collaboration.
His visit follows a visit early this year to Zimbabwe by a team of Iranian who came and briefly worked in local hospitals on an exchange programme.
“You might be aware that early this year we had a team from Iran visiting Zimbabwe and we have been in discussions on areas of cooperation,” said VP Chiwenga.
“So, we have come here to look into their various pharmaceutical companies because they are both good at equipment manufacturing and drug manufacturing including vaccines.
“That is exactly what we would want in our hospitals. A lot of equipment we have seen which would be used in our hospitals for open hearty surgery, in intensive care unit among others.
“This equipment is manufactured here and we will continue discussing and are interested in manufacturing that equipment in Zimbabwe,” said VP Chiwenga.
