Zimbabwe and Iran should speed up the implementation of more than 13 agreements signed between the two countries in 2023 so that people from the two nations can start deriving benefits from close cooperation between Harare and Tehran, Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has said.

In 2023, President Mnangagwa and his then-Iranian counterpart, President Ebrahim Raisi superintended over the signing of 13 Memoranda of Agreement in Harare to deepen cooperation in many sectors.

Dr Chiwenga met Iranian Minister of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare, Dr Ahmad Meydari today.

In his address, VP Chiwenga called upon stakeholders from both countries to move with speed in implementing the agreements in line with the will of the two countries’ political leaders.

“Honourable Minister, you may be aware that we have several signed agreements between our two countries. These have the potential to transform our bilateral relations and foster cooperation,” he said.

“I am confident that these agreements may also help us to address international business challenges emanating from unfavourable trading business policies. We must ensure the timeous implementation of signed agreements.”

He said Iranian First Vice President, Dr Mohammad Reza Aref, had expressed the same sentiments during their meeting on Monday.

VP Chiwenga challenged Ambassadors representing Zimbabwe and Iran to push for the implementation of the agreements.

“Ambassadors in Tehran and Harare must be the first point of contact for the implementation of these agreements,” he said.

VP Chiwenga later toured an Iranian pharmaceutical company – Tamin Pharmaceutical Investment Company – with a view of tapping into its vast potential.

On Monday evening, VP Chiwenga addressed a meeting where he conveyed Zimbabwe’s condolences on a fire explosion that occurred over the weekend, where some people were killed and hundreds were injured at the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas.
