Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has arrived in Gaborone, Botswana, to represent President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the regional commemorations of World Children’s Day.

The event, globally commemorated on November 20, is being held five days early in SADC to accommodate Member States’ participation.

VP Chiwenga will join eight other high-level delegations from Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Malawi, Eswatini, Lesotho, and South Africa.

World Children’s Day is a reminder to leaders on their obligations to children.

Speaking to journalists, VP Chiwenga emphasised Zimbabwe’s commitment to improving children’s welfare and preparing them for adulthood.

“We are here to participate in the fifth commemorations of the regional Children’s Day,” VP Chiwenga said.

“Our region has chosen to commemorate this day together. It is an opportunity for children to interact with their peers from various cultures.

“It is also a platform for children to express their needs and expectations from leadership. They are the future leaders of tomorrow,” he said.

During his visit, Dr Chiwenga will also pursue economic engagements aligned with President Mnangagwa’s diplomatic thrust.
