Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has urged Zimbabweans to lead humane lives characterised by love, selflessness and care for the elderly and vulnerable.
He made the remarks at the burial of his aunt, Gogo Esther Chiwenga, the sister of the Vice President’s father, who passed away last week at the age of 97. He described her as an epitome of selflessness and wise counsel.
Accompanied by his wife, Colonel Miniyothabo Chiwenga, the Vice President attended the burial in Wedza yesterday.
He said his aunt was a reservoir of wisdom, significantly contributing to the upbringing of their family and community by instilling upright morality.
Dr Chiwenga stressed that all mortal beings have limited time on earth and would be better off leaving behind a legacy that champions family, community and national interests.
He reserved special praise for his nephews who cared for his aunt during her later years.
“My aunt was renowned for her wise counsel, always encouraging us to lead lives filled with integrity and moral uprightness,” said Dr Chiwenga.
“I want to share this message with everyone: strive to leave behind a positive legacy. When your time comes, may people remember you fondly, speaking only good things about your name and the impact you had on their lives.
“I also wish to express my gratitude to my nephews for their dedication in caring for my aunt during her later years when she faced health challenges. Your kindness and support did not go unnoticed — well done, my nephews.”
Dr Chiwenga urged them to look after their elders and those who are vulnerable.
“Let us commit to nurturing and supporting them at all times, as this reflects our shared humanity and compassion,” he said.
The burial was attended by various dignitaries, including Mashonaland East Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Itai Ndudzo, and Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire, among other senior Government officials.
Minister Machakaire emphasised the importance of young people respecting elders and senior figures in society. He urged youths to embrace a culture of respect, recognising that honouring those who have paved the way is crucial for fostering a harmonious and prosperous society.
