VICE President Emmerson Mnangagwa came to the rescue of the Midlands Paralympics Games team when he donated food worth $6,000 for the team’s camping.
The Vice President is also the Midlands Paralympics and Youth Games ambassador.
The team has been in camp at Chaplin High School since Thursday preparing for the eighth edition of the Zimbabwe National Paralympics Games set for Harare.
The Games start on Tuesday and end on April 11.
Midlands will be represented by 154 athletes and officials at the national meet.
Receiving the food, Midlands Provincial Education Director, Agnes Gudo, expressed gratitude to Vice President Mnangagwa and said the donation will go a long way in alleviating the challenges faced by the Paralympics team.
“The coming in of the Vice President who is also the ambassador of both the Youth Games and the Paralympics is a welcome gesture. In fact it was a big relief for us as the Local Organising Committee as this will cover for the duration of the team’s camping,” she said.
“This donation will also go a long way in motivating the athletes as they will feel that there are people who still care for them in society. We hope this gesture will bring us success which has always been part of the Midlands Paralympics Games team since their inception.”
The provincial education director also paid tribute to Sable Chemicals, Kwekwe City Council, Metro Peech and Plan International who donated to the team.
Midlands still needs $30,000 for the team to successfully undertake the Harare campaign.
The province came third in last year’s Games held in Mashonaland East despite sending a team of 23 athletes.
In 2011 and 2012 Midlands came first at the Games and this year their hopes will be pinned on Beauty Mpande and Thobekile Khoza.
Clement Nyoni, Kudakwashe Paradzai and Vimbai Zvinowanda will compete in amputees athletics as well as intellectually challenged football which won gold for four consecutive years.
