Vice President Kembo Mohadi has hailed President Mnangagwa for taking the initiative to address service delivery challenges in urban areas where local authorities have been failing to execute their mandates.
In brief remarks after the President met representatives from the country’s 92 local authorities in Harare yesterday, Vice President Mohadi thanked President Mnangagwa for taking time off his busy schedule to interact with the council officials.
“Allow me Your Excellency to express gratitude for this initiative by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works.
“The articulation of His Excellency’s vision for local authorities should thus be understood in our quest for an upper middle income economy.
“On behalf of everyone and indeed on my own behalf, we are grateful to Your Excellency, we are humbled that you are always there for us.
“I want to commend the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works for this unique initiative,” said VP Mohadi.
He said such interactions were of paramount importance as the country thrives to improve service delivery in the development agenda.
VP Mohadi noted that the local government sector was key in the country’s quest for attaining an upper middle income status by 2030.
Urban local authorities have been dominated by opposition parties since 2000, a period during which there has been a marked deterioration in living conditions in the country’s main cities.
Unplanned settlements, illegal business structures, chaotic transport services, bust sewer and water pipes and uncollected refuse now characterise the urban centres, particularly the capital, Harare.
