ZIMBABWE and Palestine are exploring areas of deepening bi-lateral cooperation as the two countries seek to enhance mutually beneficial partnerships.
Speaking soon after paying a courtesy call on Vice President Kembo Mohadi at his offices in Harare yesterday, Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Dr Tamer Almassri, said the meeting sought to update the VP on the ongoing situation in Palestine, particularly the humanitarian crisis resulting from the Israel attacks on Gaza.
Ambassador Almassri noted the importance of solidarity between Palestine and Zimbabwe.
“I met with VP Mohadi to discuss the situation in Palestine, particularly the ongoing ‘genocide’ and the political factors driving the Israeli government’s actions in the West Bank.
“We exchanged solidarity messages, acknowledging our shared historical challenges, including illegal sanctions.
“Our bilateral relationship has been long standing and also we do enjoy the support of Zimbabwe on international platforms such as the United Nations and here at the African Union,” he said.
The Ambassador further articulated the dire circumstances faced by Palestinians.
“I feel welcomed by my comrades in Zimbabwe, especially during these challenging times. The Israeli genocide against our people in Gaza has escalated, and we discussed the political environment that enables these actions.”
Ambassador Almassri condemned Israel’s actions, describing them as a violation of international law.
He pointed out the double standards in global responses to such crises, contrasting Zimbabwe’s experience with illegal sanctions against Israel’s perceived immunity.
Ambassador Almassri also emphasised the significance of cooperation, stating that such collaboration tends to yield positive outcomes and will enable Palestine to reach its potential.
The meeting, he said, also focused on enhancing bilateral relations through regular updates.
“We discussed our bilateral relations and agreed to strengthen our meetings and visits. This will keep our leaderships informed about current developments and facilitate the exchange of opinions”.
Ambassador Almassri expressed gratitude for Zimbabwe’s chairmanship of SADC under President Mnangagwa, reiterating the commitment to work together until Palestinian occupation ends and sanctions on Zimbabwe are lifted.
“We wish all the best to our comrades, and we stand united in our efforts,” he said.
The Ambassador also called for the immediate removal of sanctions on Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe has supported the State of Palestine in its struggle against the Israeli apartheid occupation of the West Bank and Gaza since 1967.
Zimbabwe and Palestine enjoy warm bilateral relations backdating to the liberation struggle in the 1970s.
