VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Kembo Mohadi yesterday toured Mahetshe Primary School in Maphisa, the venue for this year’s Independence Children’s Party, and expressed satisfaction with the progress made in preparing the site for the national event.
The Children’s Party, to be held on the eve of Independence Day, is expected to host about 3 050 children drawn from across the country.
VP Mohadi was accompanied by Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, Minister of State for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Albert Nguluvhe, Information Communication Technologies, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera, and her deputy, Dingimuzi Phuthi.
Following the tour, VP Mohadi commended the ongoing works, particularly the pace and quality of infrastructure development at the school.
“You are doing a wonderful job. Well done. I am happy with what I am seeing here,” he said.
The Vice-President also inspected digital infrastructure being installed at the institution, noting that Maphisa is not being left behind in the country’s digital transformation drive.
Minister Mavetera said her ministry had established a fully equipped computer laboratory at Mahetshe Primary School, as well as another at Mahetshe Secondary School, as part of efforts to bridge the digital divide.
“We want to thank the visionary leadership of President Mnangagwa, who continues to champion inclusive development and ensures that no place is left behind,” she said.
The minister said the ministry is rolling out digital infrastructure across the province, with computer laboratories now established in every district to improve access to information and communication technologies.
“In total, 60 computers have been supplied to this school. We are also working on setting up Starlink connectivity to ensure reliable internet access,” said Minister Mavetera.
To complement the infrastructure rollout, the ministry has also trained over 2 000 people in digital skills and established six digital centres across Matabeleland South Province.
“There is still more work to be done as we align with the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Following the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy by His Excellency, it is critical that we equip our citizens with relevant tools and skills for the future,” she said.
In addition to ICT infrastructure, the delegation also toured newly constructed classroom blocks and a science laboratory at the school.
Of the 3 050 children expected to attend the event, 2 000 will be from Matabeleland South Province, while 500 will be drawn nationally and 50 from each of the remaining provinces.
Matopo High School will provide a choir of 50 learners, while 500 learners will participate in mass displays during the celebrations.
The Children’s Party is one of the key highlights of the Independence Day commemorations, reflecting the Government’s commitment to inclusivity and youth development.
