MOTORING enthusiasts in Bulawayo are in for an adrenaline-fuelled Independence Day today, as ZKS Spinners Arena hosts a high-octane burnout showcase to mark Zimbabwe’s 45th birthday.

Blending motorsport thrills with national pride, the event is expected to draw crowds from across the city as both local and international spinners set the tarmac ablaze in a vibrant celebration of freedom and culture. Confirmed spin kings include crowd favourites Amakhosi, Mac D, Ben, AK47, Mavusane “The Rock”, Sbahle, Mastanda, Saviour, Mahogan, Dirty Boys, Bhova, and Santos from Zambia. South Africa’s Kutja and King Kruger will also be in action, promising serious tyre-slaying excitement.

With US$1 000 up for grabs for the day’s best spinner, competitors are expected to bring nothing short of their A-game.
ZKS Spinners Arena proprietor, Zakhele Mlilo, said preparations are complete for what promises to be a landmark Independence celebration.

“Independence Day is about culture, heritage, unity, and honouring the sacrifices that brought us freedom. At ZKS, we believe spinning can bring people together under these shared values,” said Mlilo.

“We’re not just putting on a show, we’re creating a space for families to enjoy the day, feel a sense of pride and freedom, and celebrate a sport they love.”

Once considered a rebellious subculture, motorsport spinning has evolved in Bulawayo, with ZKS Spinners Arena playing a key role in shifting perceptions. Through consistent community engagement, the arena now offers free weekend sessions for amateurs and aspiring spinners, nurturing future talent.

“Our community is the backbone of this journey. Their support has helped us expand, improve facilities, and grow the sport. Now, we’re calling on all of Bulawayo to get behind us and help shine a spotlight on spinning,” Mlilo added.

As the nation celebrates its independence, Mlilo also paid tribute to the fallen heroes who made such freedoms possible.

“It’s because of their sacrifices that we enjoy peace, freedom, and yes, even spinning. So, this event is also a salute to their legacy.”
