VUMI Moyo was elected Hwange Golf Club captain unopposed at the 58th annual general meeting held in Hwange last Friday evening.
Moyo was the previous vice-captain and takes over from Edwin Moyo who stepped down after one year at the helm citing pressing commitments.
The vice-captain’s post went to Morgan Gorerino who was the secretary in the old committee ushered into office during the annual general meeting last year.
Lovemore Sibanda remains the club’s treasurer for another one year term.
Sylvester Tshamala, Charles Kolosa, Robson Dumani, Stephen “Zero” Simukai and Cephas Ncube were elected committee members with the club secretary set to come from one of the five members.
In a notice read before the proceedings, Victor Rakabopa retained his club chairman’s post after being given a fresh mandate by the club president Jemmister Chininga who is also the colliery’s acting managing director.
In his remarks during the meeting, Rakabopa thanked the old committee for a sterling job to promote the sport despite the challenging economic environment.
“I would like to thank the old committee led by Edwin Moyo for a sterling effort during the past year despite the tough operating environment. As chairman, I would also like to pay tribute to the horticulturist Artwell Ndebele and his team for improving the course which is now making it easier for golfers to enjoy the game.
“The other area worth mentioning is junior development where a lot of ground has been covered and I urge the new office bearers to continue with a huge push towards developing these youngsters,” said Rakabopa.
The vibrant junior golf development thrust, co-ordinated by Hwange-born professional golfer Phillip Tshuma, now based in Bulawayo and Mubita Njamba, has seen the emergence of Thomas Coulter Primary School student Keith Banda who is now featuring prominently in various tournaments with a handicap of 10.
Monthly medal winners during the past year were also awarded prizes during the lively function.
These were Edwin Moyo (January); Christian Lungu (February); Marko Phiri (March and June); Didymus Ngorora (April); Keith Banda (May); Morgan Gorerino (July); Khumbulani Tshimiti (August and September); Artwell Ndebele (October); Stephen Simukai (November) and Moses Moyo (December).
Tournaments which include the Hwange Closed, Kamandama, Old Mutual, and the Chaferfly/Hwange Open are held annually at the 18-hole golf course which was awarded the Order of Merit Status late last year.
The Matabeleland Golf Association vice president Victor Suerga also attended the meeting.
Around 90 amateur golfers are registered members.
