FOLLOWING his acclaimed performance at the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in India, renowned cricket administrator Vumi Moyo continues his meteoric rise on the global stage. He has landed a coveted role as senior event manager at the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States of America.
The former Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket Association (BMCA) chairman’s expertise has garnered international recognition. The opportunity to work at another World Cup signifies the global appreciation for Moyo’s ability to ensure seamless operations on the biggest stages. At this T20 extravaganza, Moyo will take the reins at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.
“It’s a blessing and humbling experience, that my service is appreciated at the highest level, I have no words to describe it. It is thrilling to have gotten this opportunity to work as a senior event manager at the World Cup, once again. It is one of the biggest events in the world,” said Moyo.
While the World Cup kicked off on June 2, Vumi Moyo awaits his first official assignment. He’ll take centre stage on June 16, managing the Australia vs Scotland match at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet.
Moyo’s packed schedule continues with the Netherlands vs Sri Lanka match on June 17, followed by the much-anticipated co-host clash — West Indies vs Afghanistan — on June 18. He’ll also oversee three crucial Super Eight matches.
As the silent conductor behind the scenes, Moyo ensures a seamless experience for everyone. His responsibilities encompass ICC operations in St Lucia, including interacting with team managers, officials, media and stakeholders across hospitality, catering, branding, security, and more. Matchday schedules, timings, cricket operations, balls, ceremonies, flags and signage — all fall under his watchful eye.
Moyo, a seasoned veteran from the 2023 World Cup, stresses that the pressure remains constant. He views working within a passionate cricket community like St Lucia as the ultimate test of his skills.”It’s a different environment but being a World Cup there is always pressure because the world is watching and there’s no room for error. St Lucians really love their cricket. It’s the pinnacle, the ultimate test.
If I succeed at this level, everything else is possible,” he said. Following his latest achievement, Moyo said he hopes that it inspires other people that anything is possible and they should work hard to make their dreams a reality. He believes that there is a lot of talent to be unearthed in Zimbabwe.
“I hope that my story will motivate and encourage other Zimbabweans, especially the young ones, to follow their dreams and passions. I want to tell them that anything is possible and all that one must do is to work hard.
“I believe that Zimbabwe has a lot of talent and potential and as such can achieve great things in cricket and other fields,” said Moyo. During his stint as senior events manager in the 2023 World Cup in India, he took charge of the semi-final match between the hosts and New Zealand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Moyo was not originally assigned to the Wankhede Stadium but his contract was extended to cover the iconic venue after he had done a great job at the Dharamshala Stadium. –@brandon_malvin
