THE recently formed Mutual Cycling Club will hold its first race for junior cyclists at the Tshabalala Game Sanctuary this morning. The 50km affair, dubbed WafaWafa Under-20 Road Race, is aimed at grooming young cyclists, and will see the youngsters try to outsmart each other for the 700 rand that has been set aside for the winner.

Mutual Club chairman John Machekera said they were expecting over 30 young riders to take part in the race that kicks off and ends at the game sanctuary.
“This is our first race for youngsters and we hope it is going to play a crucial role in creating hype among young riders and also be a ground for grooming future racers.

“We feel there is lot of young talent out there but it is not being harnessed and not taking part in competitive races,” said Machekera, adding that there was a lot of potential in young riders and hoped their club, which was formed in August, would be the breeding ground for future racers.

He said the cyclists would start at Tshabalala Game Sanctuary and race 25km towards Matopos and then make a U-turn, to the starting point.
The winner will walk away with 700 rand while the second placed rider will get 400 rand and the cyclist who comes third pockets 200 rand.

Machekera said the race is sponsored by Musa Chidembo and Kucaca Phulu.
