1 Peter 1:13; “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
At some stage in our lives our emotions will let us down to a point where we just have to release what has been pent up and can no longer be held back. I have noticed that we all go through emotional lows and highs and at our lowest point, everything that we have been trying to hold back cannot be restrained.
For many, it is a sign of strength to avoid venting and airing, the supposed accepted norm is to have the ability to hold it together regardless of the circumstances. We are all taken on an emotional roller coaster given the nature of how our days swing like pendulums. The most stressful issues around life centre on our finances, relationships, bereavements and careers. Each of these elements has a specific effect on how we react to situations and how we feel.
For many of us, our single largest investment in terms of time is spent around work and career, this therefore becomes the focal point to everything. The slightest change in the work environment can affect us, more often than others. What triggers our emotional stress are issues that have to do with people and how we relate with them.
It is a common principle that relationships are the essence of life and therefore the slightest breakdown in them can have catastrophic consequences. We all want to be liked and loved and the minute this is taken from us, our bodies automatically go into a default setting of distress and before we know it, a complete imbalance in our emotional state occurs.
While it may not be easy to understand why we react the way we do to circumstances and issues, the truth is that some of the things we invest our emotions in are not important at all. We invest a considerable amount of time and energy in things that don’t matter, things that, when we look back, we realise were a waste of time and energy.
It’s not always easy to choose what to focus on or to decide what to leave behind; it’s sometimes easier to cling on to things whether they are good or bad for us. The secret is to ask the Lord to give you the insight to invest in things that will add value rather than drain you. We will experience many an emotion based on where we are, what matters is that the moment will come to pass and before long the sun will shine again.
Be blessed.
