Ephesians 4 vs 29; “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
On endless occasions, I have listened as people have spoken to me. Some of the things said have made my blood boil with rage, but I have had to say, Lord please help me to just keep quiet, this moment will pass.
People can be so provocative that if unchecked they will drive you to a place of rage and before you know it you have said and done things you will regret. Words are such a powerful antidote for both good and bad.
Words can be used to dowse a flame or actually stoke it up depending on how they are applied. We are all of a disposition where we have been built to draw our emotions from how people relate to us.
The Lord also created people who have very short fuses with a very limited ability to withstand so when pushed they draw from the person they are relating to.
So when one loses their ability to be rational and see clearly when confronted by unreasonable behaviour, it’s natural to lash out, to want to correct and seek redress. The question is; how do we control the aggression of those that mean harm toward us?
Christianity speaks of turning the other cheek, allowing those that seek to hurt to be dealt with by the passage of time. Sometimes passive resistance to things is the best medicine to bringing sanity to an otherwise difficult circumstance.
The minute two people decide to lash out at each other, chaos descends. Before long you have a slinging match and people cannot quite tell who the fool is.
Each time someone drives you to the brink ask the Lord to guide your words and actions, respond differently.
Words spoken softly can be the remedy that is required to end a misunderstanding. It is so much easier to respond in anger, yet wisdom and God’s grace in our life demands that we listen and use the very bare minimum of words to stoke down the fire.
So the next time someone tries to provoke you and draw you to a dark place ask the Lord to give you the strength to walk away from that situation.
Be blessed.
