Walking in Spirit: At peace

Psalms 4:8 NKJV; “I will both lie down in peace and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

We sometimes take for granted so much of the basic freedom that we enjoy. The ability to freely commute from one point to another, to interact with whom we want to and be around those we cherish and love.

The world is a mixed pot of differing conditions and circumstances. The news constantly highlights the things that seem to continually go wrong. There are people who endanger the lives of others. Scores are settled, not by spiritual means, but rather on the basis of an eye for an eye.

Hatred has become common place. It’s a currency that is shared without reason. Our value system, which continually evolves, is moulded and altered through the media. We are conditioned to alter the bounds of what is reasonable. Everyday the boundaries are stretched and before long we are used to the abnormal.

What was considered unusual and wrong is now considered the new norm. Today, I want to focus on the things we take for granted. The simple blessings that we take for granted and yet they play an important role in shaping our day-to-day lives and ultimately determine the quality of life we have.

Look around you today. Look at the person next to you, if the circumstances changed that individual would not be there. Yes money and all the other problems of the world are there, but the privilege of ensuring that your loved ones are close and are assured of safety is an enduring blessing.

Very often we fall into the trap of finding fault with everything, we continually complain and cry about everything. What is it that we really cherish and value? What is our life about, what are we living for?

In the news, we are bombarded with incidents of intense horror, of meaningless and needless pain that is deliberately shared. Let’s focus on some of the unsaid things that make our lives pleasant.

A story is told in the Bible where Jesus heals three blind people, but only one returns to say thank you. The story reminds us that our Maker expects and recognises the need for gratitude.

Are you expressing gratitude for the life you have despite all the flaws it may come with? Very few things in this world are perfect. In these less than perfect circumstances find time to express gratitude.

Be blessed.
