Exodus 33:14; “Trust God to show you his ways.”
I HAVE two children, both fairly young. One of the most interesting aspects about having them is the ability to observe them in their natural element, as they study, play and ultimately just behave like children.
They go through such interesting periods. One minute they cannot stand each other, the next they are jumping up and down together without a single care in the world. The other day one of them was taken ill and had to go to hospital, the older one who stayed behind could not sleep.
He kept asking where his brother was and how he was. He finally fell asleep amidst great difficulty. His heart was troubled. When he woke up the first thing he did was to rush to see if his friend had come back.
Our friends are a bit like that aren’t they? One minute we get along like a house on fire the next we just can’t stand them. One thing is, however, certain, we can’t live without them. God put people in our lives for a reason. Ecclesiastes 4:9 aptly articulates this point; “Two people are better than one, for they can help each other succeed.”
As I reflected on my children it made me think about the friends I have and how precious they are. The people who give me wise counsel, lift me up when I am down, sing, laugh, pray and above all share the mysteries of His will in my life.
Let’s pray that our friends continue to be the pillars that form the basis of who we are and as we do that, let’s also take time to ensure that we play our part by being the friend that those in our lives yearn for. A person to depend on who is constructive, well-meaning, but above all a God-sent in the lives of others.
The Bible tells the story of David and Jonathan, a friendship that superseded the bond of blood, a friendship that was rooted in love and the steadfast belief that loyalty to those that we call our friends is more important than any other value that we may cherish.
May the Lord continue to place people in our lives, may He sift through them like sand and as His will determines, may He lead us to friends who have been sent from above, who are there to shield, protect, guide, laugh, play and pray with us.
May His ways lead to the perfect friends we deserve and may we in turn be that for those around us. Be blessed.
