Romans 15:4 KJV; “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”
The past forms an interesting aspect of our lives. We all have a past and as we think back on it, the various elements can be broken down into two categories, moments that have brought us joy or pain.
Interestingly, unlike most things, our emotions don’t quite have room for grey areas. It’s either you are happy or you are unhappy. Put simply, there can only be two shades to the human condition.
As I reflected on my own past it got me thinking, what have I learned throughout all my experiences? As I have reflected on the various stages of life that I have endured, how have I come out of the experiences?
Have I come out a better person, or have I merely glossed over things and continued to do the very same things that got me into trouble in the past? Better still, how have I reinforced the lessons learnt from the things that have made me happy?
As I read Romans 15:4, I realised that God in his wisdom engineered our lives and our general existence in such a way that past experiences should form the basis of life’s lessons. These lessons should essentially assist us in being instructed. In other words, we should learn from our past, history should be a teacher.
It is said that only a fool does the same thing over and over and expects a different result. Are there things about our lives that have made us behave like fools, where we have chosen to disregard the instruction of the past?
Our Father up above has conditioned our minds in such a way that we should be willing to learn and through this learning process that sometimes forces us to endure and experience things untoward, He sufficiently encourages us through His word.
This encouragement assures us that through His will for our lives, we are winners. Whatever path we are on, should we be willing to put aside our mistakes, there is hope that exists through His word that we will succeed. The scriptures were written as a source of light, let us therefore allow this light to illuminate our ways.
The future is bright for you and I, let us be willing students in the book of life. Like all good students may we cross the finish line.
