Proverbs 15:16-17 NKJV; “Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure with trouble. Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, than a fatted calf with hatred.”
I received numerous calls enquiring why I had not sent out a daily reflection on Good Friday. I must apologise, I tend to take commercial breaks over weekends and holidays. Nevertheless, I would like to share with you an extraordinary conversation I had over the phone on the night of Good Friday.
A few days prior to the holidays I travelled. During my travels a friend that I also consider a brother invited me for lunch. He arranged for me to be dropped off at a prominent hotel in his city. I was duly dropped off, but I then suggested that rather than us having a meal at his choice of hotel; he should take me to a fast food outlet. He obliged and took me to a restaurant that serves flame grilled chicken.
We sat in a corner and spoke at length. I thoroughly enjoyed the basic meal of roasted chicken and a coleslaw salad, I even asked for seconds. The lunch ended and he dropped me back at the offices where I was having my meetings.
Upon my return home he called me and said; “My brother I just want to thank you. I have just had a deep conversation with my wife and I remembered our lunch. I just want you to know that despite you refusing to eat at the hotel I had suggested and opting for a much cheaper lunch in less opulent surroundings, that was one of the best lunches I have ever had. I enjoyed the conversation, the setting was very simple, but we were so content and happy. If you can, I would really like you to write about this. I learnt an important lesson that day, that simplicity sometimes brings immense joy to one’s life, thank you for the lesson.”
To be honest I did not intend for it to be a lesson, I just wanted a basic meal that I would enjoy. Nevertheless it got me thinking, my brother is right. Are we not guilty of complicating our lives by some of the things we lumber on ourselves? It might be the expensive champagne taste, the friends, the unnecessary associations or even the extra unnecessary expenses we bear that invariably get us in all sorts of trouble.
God intended for life to be simple, for us to enjoy everything on this earth that He created. Let us reboot our priorities and get things right. Be blessed.
