Manicaland war veteran Cde Reuben Matorera, whose Chimurenga name was Cde Kanyau, died yesterday at Makumbi Hospital in Domboshawa after a short illness.
Zanu PF Central Committee Member and Buhera North legislator Cde William Mutomba confirmed the death of the liberation fighter whom he described as a dependable cadre.
“He distinguished himself well before and after the liberation struggle. He was very dependable and loyal, not only to the party. The death is not only a loss to Manicaland or the party but the country as a whole,” said Cde Mutomba.
He said Cde Matorera managed to wade off machinations by the opposition MDC which he said had now morphed to CCC. Cde Mutomba said Cde Matorera was instrumental during the Second Chimurenga when the Government embarked on a fast track land reform programme.
“He has been unwavering in defence of the country’s interests. He played a great role in ensuring the fulfilment of the objective of the liberation struggle, that land be restored to black majority,” he said.
His son Danny Matorera said his father’s remains will be taken to Buhera for his interment today.
Born on 12 August 1954, Cde Matorera went to school in Buhera before he received military training in Mgagao in Tanzania before he was deployed to Mount Darwin and surrounding areas during the liberation struggle.
He is survived by his wife, Haruperi and six children.
