War Veteran Cde Dennis Hungwe laid to rest at Bulawayo Provincial Heroes Acre

WAR Veteran Cde Dennis Hungwe, also known as Cosmas Tongai Muhondo during the armed struggle, was laid to rest on 25 January at the Bulawayo Provincial Heroes Acre in Nkulumane suburb.

He passed away on 18 January at Mpilo Central Hospital.

Dennis Hungwe was the third-born in a family of nine siblings. He attended Nyakunu Primary School from 1965 to 1970 and later moved to Derembwe Primary School from 1971 to 1972, both under Nyakunu village, led by Chief Zimunya.

He stayed home until 1976 when he decided to join the liberation war struggle in Mozambique.

During his time in the struggle, Hungwe operated in locations that include Maranga under the Matambara Detachment. He also carried out peacekeeping operations in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, and Somalia.

After Zimbabwe gained independence, he was integrated into the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and served at the 5 Infantry Battalion.

Later, he worked at Brady Barracks, now Mzilikazi Barracks, until his retirement in 2010, holding the rank of lieutenant.

At the time of his passing, Hungwe was a committee member under the Qhaphela District within the Zanu PF party.
