LIBERATION war hero and district vice-chairman of Tsholotsho Ward 5, Cde Donald Hitler Sibanda has died.
He was 58. He has been declared a liberation war hero and will be buried today at Mcetshwa Line Tsholotsho.His brother, Phenius Ndlovu, said Cde Sibanda whose pseudo name during the liberation struggle was Travel Shumba, died on Monday after being involved in car accident.
“My brother died on Monday after he was involved in a car accident near Mvundlana Primary School and died a few hours later at Tsholotsho Hospital. He was travelling with Brian Tshuma who died on the spot and was buried on Thursday,” he said.
Cde Sibanda joined the liberation struggle in 1976. As most aspiring cadres, he crossed the border into Botswana where he was flown to Zambia and stayed at Nampundu Transit camp.
Sibanda was then sent to Russia where he trained in artillery. He returned to Zambia in September 1978 and crossed to Zimbabwe in October 1979. He operated in Hwange area and held the rank of platoon commander.
In 1980 he assembled at Gwayi and attested into the Zimbabwe National Army in 1981 as a private. He rose through the ranks to the position of warrant officer and had won seven awards.
He retired in May 2006 and became an active member of Zanu-PF. He is survived by a wife and four children.
