THE Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) elective congress will be held on July 12.

Zanu-PF Secretary for War Veterans, Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees, Cde Douglas Mahiya, announced the date for the congress yesterday at a press briefing that was also attended by the Minister of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs Monica Mavhunga and the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare July  Moyo.

The congress’ electoral college will comprise all newly-elected provincial executives and five members from each administrative district.

Initially the congress was supposed to be held from June 14 to 16, but was postponed for four weeks to allow unity and cohesion to prevail among ex-combatants to ensure the holding of democratic elections within all structures of the association.

The structures include those led by Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa, Cde Moffat Marashwa and Cde Andrease Mathibela.

Cde Mahiya said in line with democratic principles, all ordinary war veterans at district level will participate in the selection of a new  leadership.

The address by Cde Mahiya followed his efforts last month, which culminated in a meeting comprising all various leadership structures claiming to be the legitimate leaders of ZNLWA.

“The meeting resolved that democratic and transparent elections, which start from administrative districts and run concurrently, escalating to the top, will be held throughout the country,” he said.

Cde Mahiya said all war veterans were eligible to cast votes in their administrative districts and to contest all district posts on June 22.

Thereafter, he said, provincial elections will be held concurrently in a similar manner on June 29.

The provincial electoral college comprises all newly elected district executives in each province.
