A war veterans non-profit making trust, the Veteran of the Liberation Struggle of Zimbabwe (VLSZ), has said it is mobilising resources and has come up with ways, including conducting campaigns countrywide, to ensure President Mnangagwa and the ruling party, Zanu PF, win by a landslide in this year’s harmonised elections.
The Veteran of the Liberation Struggle of Zimbabwe Trust was formed for the sole purpose of advocating for the reburial of veterans of the liberation struggle who are still in shallow graves and also to secure skills in various institutions for children of war veterans.
Addressing journalists in Harare, VLSZ national chairperson Cde Jabulani Mbetu said their main object was to also provide housing for the veterans of the liberation struggle and provide the survivors and victims of the struggle with basic necessities for their upkeep.
“As the Veteran of the Liberation War Struggle of Zimbabwe we have pledged to put Zanu PF first and to ensure that President Mnangagwa, who has given us a special place in the ruling party, wins by a landslide in this year’s harmonised elections,” he said.
Cde Mbetu said the acceptance of war veterans into the party was an indication of the trust that President Mnangagwa had in people with whom he fought arm-in-arm during the liberation struggle.
“We want to make sure that the President gets five million votes during this year’s elections,” he said.
“We have noted with concern that most of the urban areas were saturated with mostly opposition supporters, but we have since come up with ways to ensure that we win in most of these areas.”
Cde Mbetu said as one of the strategies, they were motivating their fellow war veterans to come and help build the party.
“Our thrust is to campaign for President Mnangagwa, by neutralising the urban areas,” he said.
“In some of the urban areas we have managed to acquire land for the war veterans and efforts are being made to get more land for them.”
Cde Mbetu said they were also going to provide their members with income generating projects such a poultry, farming, sewing and venturing into mining.
He said they had also mobilised resources to build private schools to assist in educating children of the disadvantaged veterans and offer practical skills short courses for the survivors funded by the organisation.
