War vets’ widows, widowers vetted

The widows and widowers can now receive benefits of their late spouses.

They received the confirmation letters at the Zanu-PF provincial headquarters at Davies Hall last Wednesday.

In an interview, chairman of the exercise who is also the Zanu-PF Bulawayo provincial secretary for transport and welfare, Cde Langelihle Mathe, said the confirmation letters would help the widows and widowers to process their benefits such as monthly payouts from the Government.

“We handed over letters to 312 widows and widowers of war veterans confirming the hero status of their spouses. These are liberation heroes and heroines,” said Cde Mathe.

“Most of the widows and widowers were from Bulawayo province and a few from Plumtree Town, Bubi and Nyamandlovu districts.”

Cde Mathe said the spouses could now visit the Department of Social welfare offices so that processing of their benefits could start.

“The spouses are happy because it is now easy for the Department of Social Welfare to process their benefits unlike before. Some have been waiting for benefits since 1998 because they had no documents to prove that their late spouses were liberation war heroes of heroines,” she said.
