Warriors close gap on OMs

DEFENDING champions, Matabeleland Warriors have reduced the gap between them and log leaders Old Miltonians (OMs) on the 2024 Bulawayo Metropolitan Rugby Football Board (BMRFB) Archer Clothing Rugby League to four points.

Warriors were in action against Highlanders this past Saturday in their first game of the second half of the league and went into the game trailing the log leaders by nine points before going on to pummel the black-and-white army with the highest score recorded so far.

The defending champions beat a lacklustre Highlanders 95-16 in one of the two men’s championship games that were played this past week. The other game saw Panthers prove too lethal for Bulldogs whom they beat 31-7. Warriors are now on 20 points while OMs are on 24 points.

With Warriors crushing Highlanders to close the gap at the top and Panthers registering their second victory of the campaign, Panthers have now leapfrogged Highlanders into third place on the standings with 11 points. Panthers are now three points ahead of Highlanders who are on eight points. Anchoring the standings is Bulldogs who have only managed to amass six points thus far.

Log leaders OMs are on 20 points. After registering the biggest win in the league so far, Warriors manager Melford Matarirano said they have every reason to celebrate at the moment and are looking forward to the upcoming games. Matarirano said they are looking at breaching the 100-mark scoreline before the league ends.

“We are so proud and excited. For us to come out and have the biggest score line recorded in the league so far, after a defeat in the previous game, I am so proud of the boys and I am excited for the other upcoming games and we hope to maintain our standards. At the moment, we have every reason to celebrate, we look forward to the challenge and more wins to come.

“We are looking at breaching the 100-mark scoreline. We are stronger and hardworking,” said Matarirano.
