ZIMBABWE’S 46th Independence Celebrations in Matobo District have generated significant excitement with council chairman Councillor Tobias Sibanda describing the event as a remarkable opportunity that will leave a lasting legacy of infrastructure development for the community.
“We have been fortunate as Matobo Rural District Council to host next year’s Independence Celebrations. We look forward to it, knowing it will benefit us in numerous ways,” said Clr Sibanda.
He highlighted that one of the key benefits will be the construction of a stadium, which will serve as the venue for celebrations, including musical performances and a traditional football match. The hosting is also expected to create employment opportunities for local youths.
“We are eager to have a stadium built. This will help us address the issue of redundancy among our youth as they will gain employment during the construction and operation of the facility,” said Clr Sibanda, who hails from Tjehondo, close to Maphisa Growth Point.
The stadium will also provide relief for Matobo FC, which plays in the Zifa Southern Region Central Division One League.
At the moment, the team uses Minda High School’s facility, which is owned by the Roman Catholic Church. The upgrade will allow Minda pupils to enjoy uninterrupted schooling, as league matches often disturb their peace, given the shared use of the facility.
Clr Sibanda also announced plans to improve infrastructure across the district, including road networks.
“All roads that have been a challenge in Matobo District will be attended to,” he assured.
Another significant benefit is the upgrading of Maphisa District Hospital.
“Our district referral hospital will receive support to enhance its facilities,” said Clr Sibanda.
He also spoke about anticipated improvements in education within the district, emphasising that hosting the Independence Celebrations is part of the Second Republic’s historic development agenda for the district.
Several prominent figures hail from Matobo District, including the late Vice-President Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, his brothers Edward and Stephen and notable businessmen and philanthropists such as Grey Mabhalane Bango, Tafi Moyo and Mtshumayeli Ngwenya. The district has also produced Minister Edgar Moyo, the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, football legends Bekithemba Ndlovu and Ali “Baba” Dube.
“Mahetshe Secondary School will benefit from the construction of an A-level block and a new laboratory. Additionally, a clinic will be built at Maphisa, thanks to the hosting of the Independence Celebrations.
Roads will also be upgraded—including the road from Bulawayo to Maphisa, from Gwanda to Maphisa, from Maphisa to Nyongolo (Chief Bhidi area) and from here to Sun Yet-Sen. All will be tarred,” Clr Sibanda outlined.
