SOUTH African President and African National Congress (ANC) leader Cyril Ramaphosa revealed on Thursday night that his party will invite other political parties to form a government of national unity.
President Ramamphosa made the revelations at the end of the ANC’s National Executive Committee meeting.
The ANC leader, whose party failed to secure a majority in last week’s national elections, said they have since engaged opposition parties such as the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Democratic Alliance (DA) and others to form a new government.
“We have therefore agreed that we will invite political parties to form a Government of National Unity as the best option to move our country forward,” said President Ramaphosa.
“The modalities of the Government of National Unity will take into account the conditions prevailing at this moment in our country’s history. The purpose of this Government of National Unity must be first and foremost to tackle the pressing issues that South Africans want to be addressed.”
President Ramaphosa said the NEC also agreed, “that this moment calls for the broadest unity of the people of South Africa, multi-party cooperation and multi-stakeholder collaboration if we are to overcome the severe challenges that confront our country.
“We are committed to ensuring that a Government of National Unity has the means and the ability to build an inclusive economy, create jobs, end corruption, tackle crime and improve the provision of services.
“In establishing a Government of National Unity, we would be building on a rich history of cooperation across divides of politics and ideology.”
