Renowned literary figure, Gogo Barbara Nkala, has delivered a powerful message against discrimination towards people living with disabilities (PWDs).
Speaking at the launch of the Makhosi Michaela Foundation (MMF) at the Praise and Worship Centre in Bulawayo recently, Gogo Nkala emphasised the importance of recognising and nurturing the talents of children, especially those with conditions like Down’s Syndrome.
“Mental disability doesn’t equate to inability. These children are special and require special care. We must not stifle their talents but rather nurture and cultivate them in the best possible environment,” she urged.
Nkala went on to highlight the remarkable achievements of individuals with neurological disabilities, citing examples such as the Mothers of Special Heroes All Abilities Choir, led by Trevor Mawaka, which recently recorded the inspirational song “Themba Lami”.
The MMF, founded by Thurston and Ntando Davies, aims to support individuals affected by Down’s Syndrome through awareness-raising, fundraising, and resource provision.
Ntando Davies expressed the foundation’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and enhancing the lives of those with Down’s Syndrome through education, advocacy, and financial support.
The launch event featured various activities including pop-up clinics, support group talks for parents and caregivers, speech therapy, sign language training, and entertainment provided by children with diverse challenges, with gospel singer Snowy as the guest performer.
Gogo Nkala and Khulu Shadreck Nkala led a heartwarming prize giveaway and cake-sharing ceremony, symbolising a celebration of diversity and inclusivity.
The event also coincided with World Down’s Syndrome Day, observed annually on March 21, underscoring the importance of raising awareness and debunking myths surrounding the condition. Barbara Nkala, known for her IsiNdebele novels and contributions to the Chichewa Bible translation project in Malawi, continues to advocate for equality and inclusion in society. – @MbuleloMpofu
