HUNDREDS of athletes have taken to the starting line of the Beitbridge Mayor’s Anti-Litter Half Marathon which will be run along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Road.
The event is a unique blend of sport and civic duty, raising awareness of the need to maintain a safe and clean environment within the border town and major highways leading to Bulawayo and Harare.
Stakes are high as scores of athletes from all over Zimbabwe have registered to celebrate the 10 years of running against rubbish, 10 years of community mobilisation, and 10 years of sending a powerful message, that a clean environment is a collective responsibility.
Organisers have lined up a number of activities and prizes for the community and athletes.
Delegates from various urban local authorities and the Musina Municipality from South Africa which has a twinning arrangement with Beitbridge are taking part.
“The preparations went on well. We have managed to put in place most of the needed items for the race such as t-shirts, race tags, medals and cash prizes. In fact, we are ready!” declared race spokesperson Raniel Ndou.
