The Bulawayo Shutdown is making a return this December with a cultural theme, “Ubuntu: I Am Because We Are”.
A captivating video teaser released on Wednesday afternoon has set the tone for the new direction. The clip features Nkayi’s Chief Mbusi Dakamela, a respected custodian of culture, who is positioned as the face and spirit guide of this year’s edition.

In the visual piece, Chief Dakamela is depicted leading his people in traditional practices such as song, dance, and poetry, artforms long used to preserve identity, memory and collective pride. The video was shot along the banks of the Shangani River, a lifeline to the Matabeleland region. The setting symbolises renewal and continuity, much like the event itself, which organisers say aims to “breathe life, togetherness and humanity through rhythm”.
Organisers said this year’s edition will depart from the more contemporary feel the Shutdown is known for, challenging revellers to reflect on the meaning of Ubuntu in their own lives.
“For now, all we can say is that people need to interpret what Ubuntu means to them. That’s simply what this event is about,” organisers said.
Ubuntu, an African philosophy rooted in compassion, respect and shared humanity, is often summarised in the expression, “Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu”, a person is a person through other people. It encourages acts such as sharing even the little one has, helping without expecting reward, and treating every individual with dignity.

The line-up for the December Shutdown will be unveiled soon, with organisers promising that even the announcement itself will align with the Ubuntu narrative.
The April edition of the Shutdown drew a massive crowd and featured South African acts Zee Nxumalo, Eemoh, Emtee, Nasty C, DJ Tira and Uncle Waffles, alongside local stars Winky D, Oriyano, Killer T and a roaster of DJs.
