Bulawayo CBD came alive with laughter, music, and vibrant colour on Heroes Day as it transformed into a lively playground, filled with cheerful mascots who danced, posed for photos, and spread endless smiles among the young ones.
Also at the helm of the festivities was charismatic MC Sipho Mercent Nyathi, whose warmth and humour kept both children and parents entertained.
DJs Stout and Andrean Snow added to the holiday spirit with upbeat sets that blended perfectly with the family-friendly atmosphere.
Children were treated to handfuls of sweets throughout the afternoon, their excitement spilling over into spontaneous dance competitions. Even adults joined in, showing off their moves to the delight of the cheering crowd.
In line with celebrating the country’s liberation war heroes, the mascots also took the party to the late Vice President, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo’s statue — keeping people well entertained with their dances there.
In a unique twist, the celebration also served as a live recording set for Groove Lounge, offering attendees a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the production of live music. This special feature gave music lovers a memorable bonus to the day’s entertainment.
Event curator Nkosilathi Dube said the idea was to make Heroes Day meaningful and fun for the younger generation.
“We planned to make it all about the children, and to entertain the kids we brought out mascots,” he explained, smiling as the little ones danced and laughed.
These mascots have now become a regular feature in the city, often stealing the show with their playful antics.
