THE Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ), Southern Region, has donated five tonnes of mealie-meal to Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Cde Judith Ncube, to cushion at least 500 vulnerable households and welfare institutions across the city.
The consignment was handed over yesterday at the Mhlahlandlela Government Complex by the millers through their Southern Region chairperson, Mr David Moyo.

Mr Moyo said the donation was part of the milling industry’s commitment to supporting communities in need and complementing Government’s social protection initiatives.
“As GMAZ, we understand the hardships that many families continue to face. Our mandate goes beyond milling grain; it includes ensuring that communities remain supported. This donation is our small but sincere contribution towards easing food insecurity among vulnerable households in Bulawayo,” he said.
He said GMAZ will continue working closely with Government and local structures to identify areas of critical need, especially during difficult seasons.
Receiving the donation, Cde Ncube commended the millers for their timely gesture, saying it would go a long way in assisting affected families and institutions such as children’s homes, old people’s homes and disability centres.

“This donation is a lifeline for many families struggling to put food on the table. We are grateful to GMAZ for stepping forward. This is the kind of partnership we encourage as we work to ensure that no one is left behind,” she said.
She said her office has already begun identifying the beneficiaries, prioritising households headed by the elderly, orphaned children, people with disabilities and low-income families.
Cde Ncube reiterated Government’s commitment to strengthening food security programmes, adding that collaboration between the State and private sector is vital in protecting citizens in difficult times.
“The challenges brought about by the drought have affected everyone, but the vulnerable have felt the greatest impact. Such acts of solidarity reaffirm our shared responsibility in building a caring society,” she said.
Beneficiaries are expected to receive the mealie-meal through established provincial distribution channels.
The donation comes as the province continues to roll out targeted drought-relief interventions under the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, with support from private players and development partners.
Cde Ncube urged other corporates to emulate GMAZ’s example, saying collective action is essential in strengthening community resilience.
“Let this be the beginning of many more partnerships anchored on service to our communities,” she said.
