STAFF at A’Zambezi River Lodge were left startled in the early hours of Saturday morning after a crocodile was spotted within the hotel precincts.
The reptile, believed to have emerged from the nearby Zambezi River, was quickly noticed by employees who alerted authorities.
The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) responded promptly to the incident.
Zimparks spokesperson Mr Luckmore Safuli confirmed that the animal was safely handled without incident.
“The animal, identified as a Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) originating from the Zambezi River system, was safely immobilised and translocated by trained Authority personnel.
“The crocodile was subsequently released back into the river. No human injuries or property damage were recorded,” said Mr Safuli.
He explained that the crocodile’s movement onto land was not unusual.
“The Authority notes that the incident occurred within the species’ natural range and habitat. The lodge is situated in a riverine environment along the Zambezi River, which supports established crocodile populations.
“Terrestrial movement by crocodiles is normal behaviour and is commonly associated with basking, nesting, dispersal, or territorial activity,” he said.
Mr Safuli added that Zimparks continues to engage hospitality operators in riverine areas to strengthen wildlife risk management, monitoring and public awareness.
Visitors to the area have been urged to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines when near natural water bodies.
“The Parks and Wildlife Management Authority reaffirms its mandate to ensure public safety while safeguarding wildlife and promoting human-wildlife coexistence,” he said.
