HUNDREDS of people braved the chilly morning weather on Tuesday and gathered at Phelandaba Stadium in Gwanda to commemorate this year’s Defence Forces Day.

The proceedings began with members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces marching through the mining town before proceeding to the stadium, where the main commemorations are being held.

This year’s celebrations are running under the theme: “ZDF Guaranteeing Peace and Stability for the Attainment of Vision 2030.”

Defence Forces Day is held annually to honour the country’s defence forces and recognise their role in maintaining peace and stability, which are critical to national development.

The commemorations also provide members of the public with an opportunity to appreciate the sacrifices and contribution of men and women serving in the country’s defence forces.

Beyond their traditional role of defending the country, the Defence Forces also assist communities through various assignments, including disaster mitigation and response.

Minister of State for Matabeleland South Provincial Affairs and Devolution Albert Nguluvhe is expected to inspect the guard of honour before delivering President Mnangagwa’s speech on his behalf.
