The Women’s Action Group (WAG) is hosting a refresher Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation (VCAT) training for media professionals in Harare today.

The training is part of Phase 2 of the Asingade Campaign, which aims to promote positive media narratives on safe and legal abortion in Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe allows termination of pregnancy only in three circumstances, in the case of rape, a pregnancy from incest and if the life of the mother or child is in danger.

The training is being attended by journalists from Harare, Bulawayo, and Mutare.

According to Ms Vimbai Nyika, WAG representative, the objectives of the refresher course is to enhance journalists’ capacity to accurately and sensitively report on safe abortion and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR).
“By the end of the training, we expect journalists to have a better understanding of safe abortion and SRHR, be more interested in reporting on these issues, and have improved capacity for ethical and accurate reporting,” Ms Nyika said.

The training is expected to contribute to promoting positive media narratives on safe abortion in Zimbabwe.
