SIYAZAMA Primary School in Insiza North Constituency is reaping significant benefits from a piggery project initiated in January 2025 by Zanu-PF Ward 23 Councillor Sikhanyisiwe Nkomo.

According to the affiliate Patriotic Vendor4ED Makhalima Dumiso, the project has recorded remarkable growth, with the school’s pig population increasing from just four to 32 within a little over a year.

Speaking during a visit to the school on April 6, 2026, stakeholders commended Cllr Nkomo’s visionary leadership, which has helped transform the school into a budding income-generating hub. School headmaster Mr Douglas Sithole praised the initiative, noting its positive impact on the institution.

As a token of appreciation, the school announced that it would present Cllr Nkomo with a heavyweight adult pig in recognition of her contribution.

Cllr Nkomo, in turn, applauded the school for its effective management of the project and pledged further support by donating US$300 towards the establishment of a goat project.

She revealed that similar livestock projects have been rolled out across several institutions in Insiza North, including the Ward 14 War Veterans League, Leechdale Farm youth group, Shangani Secondary School, Thomas Meikles Primary School, and the Shangani Mine Women’s League, each of which received four piglets.

The success of the Siyazama Primary School initiative highlights the potential of small-scale livestock projects to drive economic growth and reduce poverty in rural communities. The school has already begun generating income, with piglets now being sold at US$80 each.

Community members say the project is not only improving the school’s financial sustainability but also equipping learners with practical agricultural skills.

Stakeholders believe the initiative could serve as a model for replication in other parts of the country, particularly in rural areas where such projects can play a key role in improving livelihoods.
