THE Officer Commanding Bulawayo Province, Commissioner Jasper Chizemo, has warned residents to tighten security at their homes and businesses and remain vigilant against crime as the holiday season gets into full swing.
Comm Chizemo said police would intensify patrols, monitoring and roadblocks across the province while urging communities to work closely with law enforcement to prevent housebreaking, murder, armed robbery, stock theft, drug abuse and other crimes.
He issued the warning during a traffic safety campaign along Harare Road in Bulawayo yesterday, where he said police would maintain a visible presence through horseback, bicycle, motorcycle, motorised and foot patrols.

Comm Chizemo said police would also maintain 24-hour roadblocks as part of efforts to enhance safety during the holiday period.
With many residents expected to travel, he urged homeowners to take precautions against housebreaking by securing their properties before leaving.
“Register your house under the House Under Supervision Scheme at any nearest police station and employ guards to safeguard your premises. Ensure target hardening and removal. Install outdoor lighting or motion sensors and alarms to help catch notorious house breakers,” he said.
He also warned residents against disclosing their travel plans to strangers or posting their movements on social media, saying such information could alert criminals that homes had been left unattended.
Residents were encouraged to maintain contact with their nearest police stations and report suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods.
On murder and violent crime, Comm Chizemo urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid confrontations while intoxicated.
“Do not try to solve differences when intoxicated and solve differences amicably, not resorting to violence,” he said.
He also urged households and businesses to strengthen security against armed robberies, advising people to avoid carrying large amounts of cash and using secluded footpaths, particularly at night.
“Employers should also thoroughly vet their employees,” he said.
He urged victims and witnesses of armed robberies to report cases immediately through CID Homicide on 02922-77523, the police WhatsApp tip-off line +263789 401 080 or at any police station.
Comm Chizemo also warned livestock owners against moving cattle without the required documentation, including valid police stock clearance permits and veterinary clearance.
Parents were urged to closely monitor their children during the school holidays, particularly amid concerns over drug abuse, negative peer pressure and so-called Vuzu parties.
He urged parents to be alert to unexplained cash, new clothes and cellphones, as well as unusual gatherings of teenagers.
“Parents should check on unexplained cash, new clothes and cellphones. Monitor and report unusual gatherings of teenagers. Identify Vuzu party organisers and report to the police. Child-headed families should remain under watch. Do not allow your child to stay long into the night away from home,” he said.
Comm Chizemo also warned operators of unregistered and unlicensed drinking outlets, including shebeens and beer-drinking clubs, against violating liquor laws.
“Drunk and disorderly patrons should not be allowed into premises. Patrons should be searched for possession of dangerous weapons such as knives, machetes and catapults. It is an offence to sell liquor or allow children under 18 years to consume liquor in your premises,” he said.
He urged liquor outlet operators to observe stipulated operating hours and maintain order at their premises, saying some murder cases could be linked to activities at such establishments.
The provincial police boss said technology would also be deployed to monitor crime hotspots.
“We will be flying drones monitoring all the hot spots in the CBD,” said Comm Chizemo.
He urged the public to cooperate with police by providing information on suspected criminals, drug dealers and other illegal activities.
With increased movement of people during the holiday season, police said public vigilance and cooperation would be critical in preventing crime and ensuring the safety of residents across Bulawayo Province.
